It’s no surprise that most women, especially pregnant women, avoid processed foods at all costs, but did you know there’s a limit to what you can eat while pregnant?

It’s true. According to the American Pregnancy Association, there are foods you should definitely not eat while pregnant because they can harm the fetus. Here is a list of those foods, along with reasons you should eat them.

Avoid foods high in caffeine, such as coffee, cola, tea, and chocolate

Caffeine is a stimulant and can be dangerous for the baby. Your body needs caffeine, but your baby does not.

When pregnant, you should limit the amount of caffeine in your diet to less than 300 milligrams. Your baby’s body needs to be completely exposed to caffeine in order to have an adult-level metabolism, and it is important that caffeine is present in the baby’s system for the baby to process the caffeine properly.

A high-caffeine diet can cause problems with your heart and other organs, and it can be detrimental to your baby.

The American Pregnancy Association recommends that pregnant women avoid caffeine, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) disagrees and states that it is OK for pregnant women to drink coffee, as long as they do not exceed 300 milligrams of caffeine per day.

Some studies have shown that drinking coffee can be healthy if you only drink one cup of coffee a day, but when the amount of caffeine increases the risk of miscarriage.

Birth defects

Stillbirth

Premature birth

You can also experience side effects with caffeine when you drink caffeinated coffee. This includes:

Headaches

Depression

Nausea

Stomach pain

Increased heart rate

You should definitely limit your coffee intake. If you are caffeine sensitive, try to cut out as much caffeine as possible or cut it out entirely. You can limit the amount you consume to one cup a day.

Avoid foods high in trans fats, or trans fatty acids

Trans fats are fats that are hydrogenated, which means they have been saturated with hydrogen. This changes their molecular structure, causing them to be solid at room temperature. The amount of trans fat that can be found in the food you eat is not always clear, and some studies have shown that the amount is low.

This is important because trans fats can cause damage to the baby's arteries.

Trans fats can also have adverse effects on the body, including:

Heart disease

Stroke

Obesity

High cholesterol

Diabetes

Other diseases

The American Pregnancy Association recommends avoiding the consumption of trans fats. The CDC does not recommend avoiding trans fats but does say that pregnant women can have up to one gram of trans fats a day.

If you do choose to eat foods high in trans fats, try to have trans fats only in small amounts.

Avoid foods high in saturated fats

Saturated fats can also be harmful for the baby. Saturated fats cause blood cholesterol levels to increase, which can cause heart disease.

You should limit the amount of saturated fat in your diet, because there are no known negative effects for the baby as long as it does not exceed 2 to 3 percent of your total daily caloric intake. The CDC states that pregnant women should eat as little saturated fat as possible, but the American Pregnancy Association is more lenient.

If you decide to eat foods high in saturated fats, try to limit it to a maximum of 5 to 8 percent of your total daily caloric intake.

Milk products

Red meats

Poultry

Dairy products

You should definitely limit the amount of saturated fat you eat.

Avoid foods high in nitrates

Nitrates are found in some processed foods. This can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women because nitrates have the potential to be converted into nitrosamines, which are carcinogens. These carcinogens can harm your developing baby.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, pregnant women should eat no more than 25 milligrams of nitrate a day.

The CDC agrees, and states that you should limit the amount of nitrates you eat to 12.5 milligrams a day. This amount is considered safe because it is below the amount of nitrates your body can metabolize.

Some foods that contain nitrates include:

Salami

Sauerkraut

Pizza

Hot dogs

Ham

Beef and veal

Corned beef

Ground beef

Egg salad

Cured meats

Some vegetables can also contain nitrates, and these foods should also be limited. These include:

Peas

Onions

Potatoes

Beets

Garlic

Cabbage

Brussels sprouts

Chard

Broccoli

Cauliflower

You should definitely limit the amount of nitrates you eat because it can cause problems for the baby.

Avoid foods high in salicylates

Salicylates are found in many processed foods. This is another toxic ingredient that is bad for your baby.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, pregnant women should limit the amount of salicylates they eat to less than 1,000 milligrams per day.

If you decide to eat foods high in salicylates, try to limit the amount to as low as possible. Some foods that contain salicylates include:

Beef

Baked beans

Breaded foods

Bread

Burgers
